Jiangsu Senior Planners Extended Training

Twelve senior planners from Jiangsu Province came to the U.S. in 2005 and completed six months of professional training. At the request of Jiangsu Provincial Party Secretary Li Yuanchao and Jiangsu Construction Department Director Zhou You, APA has entered into a long-term training and exchange cooperative agreement. This agreement calls for APA to provide a variety of training and exchange opportunities for Jiangsu leaders and senior planners.

The 12 senior planners spent their first month in lectures given by American elected and appointed officials, university faculty, and professional planners in Washington, D.C. During the following three months, they worked in planning-related institutions to gain practical planning experiences and knowledge. Local hosts generously provided assignments and opportunities for these Chinese fellows to learn the American planning process first-hand. They worked alongside assigned partners in offices as staff members of the planning institution.

In the fifth month, the Chinese fellows each wrote a paper both in English and in Chinese. The papers were certified by the APA Expert Certifying Board during the final presentation. APA certified each of the trainees in the graduation ceremony.
