At the U.N.'s 5th World Urban Forum in March, APA's President, Bruce Knight, FAICP, formally announced APA's Sustaining Places Initiative. The Sustaining Places Initiative is a multi-year, multi-faceted program to define the role of planning and the comprehensive plan in addressing all human settlement issues related to sustainability, from rural areas and small towns to cities and metropolitan regions. This year's symposium will explore both the role and the key elements of the comprehensive plan — the leading policy document and tool to help communities of all sizes achieve sustainability.
