Just as land use policies affect transportation options, transportation facilities can influence future land use. This 2-day training course will approach the topic from a perspective on how to consider the indirect and cumulative impacts (ICI) that a transportation improvement could have on the surrounding community and natural resources. Topics will include:


• overview of common terms and basic methodologies
• review of regulations and case law relevant to ICI
• examples of land uses and corridor types with varying ICI issues
• understanding of current comprehensive plans and potential development, and how to gauge potential induced development
• datasets and approaches to assess the indirect impacts and the cumulative impacts of a proposed project
• team case study exercises with specific roles by experience level and group presentations


While the topic is geared particularly for planners involved with environmental impact assessment, the approaches can help county/municipal planners understand how transportation decisions affect their long-range plans. The format is designed to be modern, upbeat, interactive, and practical. Take-away materials will include copies of the training materials and a flashdrive of current policy and procedures divided by USDOT agency.
