Competitiveness and Prosperity in the Creative Economy

UT ArlingtonArlington, TX

Cities are our greatest invention and are perhaps the greatest expression of human civilization. Cities generate wealth and improve living standards while providing the density, interaction, and networks that make us more creative and productive. They are the key social and economic organizing units of our time, clustering together people, jobs, and all the inputs required for economic growth.

Consider that just two centuries ago, only 3 percent of the world's population lived in cities. At the dawn of the 20th century, it was just 14 percent. Today, it’s exploded to more than half the world’s population living in cities—that’s more than three billion people—with an estimated sixty million more moving to cities every year. And by the year 2030, more than five billion people (six out of every ten human beings) will live in cities and urban centers.

This module will explore the growing urbanization of the world’s environment, the key economic functions of cities and the critical elements and competitive assets of clusters.
