Students are provided information on regional air quality issues, with an emphasis on the southern California region. Discussion includes development of new air management programs, pollution reduction, and advancements in transportation. Students are also provided information on emerging programs in community gardens and sustainable living. The students learn about how communities can work together in novel ways to increase local food resources and organic farming. Students are provided an overview of climate change, with an emphasis on events and data from California. The speaker provided information on climate trends on a global, national, and local scale. Detailed explanations of how man-made sources of carbon dioxide and other gases are contributing to a shift in our climate, and how this has and will affect our communities, natural ecosystems and oceans. The speaker provided an overview of what environmental leadership is, and why it is a critical component of our decision making process. Specific regional case studies (focused on a legal perspective) are described providing relevant examples of why leadership is important and how a lack of leadership can significantly influence the outcome of decision making and management.
Students are provided with a history of transportation in southern California, and how decision making at a local, regional, and national scale have significant influence on efficiency, infrastructure, and environmental impacts. Case studies from the region are provided as examples of successful advancements in technology and planning, and where opportunities exist for further improvement. Students are further provided an overview of the future of transportation systems, and how Walt Disney and Disneyland have provided significant leadership and advancements in our transportation systems.
Students are provided an overview of how we plan modern communities, with an emphasis on healthy living, sustainable communities, and minimizing environmental impacts. Speakers come from diverse backgrounds and provided students with different perspectives on how we develop communities, what the future holds for future development and design, and how environmental leadership plays a critical role in land use planning and decision making. Students are provided information on environmental philanthropy programs, and the importance of having a strong base of community, business, and governmental support for environmental programs. The speaker emphasized the need to grow funding opportunities and expand environmental programs to meet the needs of our communities, advance education, and improve our environment. The speaker provided a summary and overview of the entire course (over four different sessions) and how the various topics discussed all fit together in creating a well-rounded and suitably informed environmental leader in the region.
