The session illustrates these practices and promotes an alternative vision for growth by featuring good, innovative urban and rural developments in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. It also suggests policy reforms that will remove barriers to applying best practices and provide incentives to implement them.
Building from the Best salutes the talent and expertise of developers, designers, architects and planners who are committed to quality and sustainability and contribute to a vision of a West with healthy landscapes, resilient economies and vibrant communities. Instructors: Ralph Johnson AICP Ralph Johnson has taught urban and community design at Montana State University since 1986, where he was also the Director of the Community Design Center until 2005. Additionally, he maintains an active planning and design consultancy with an emphasis on providing sustainable, contemporary and creative responses to planning and preservation issues faced by Rocky Mountain communities. He has recently completed a book entitled Building from the Best of the Northern Rockies, which articulates sustainable planning and design principles through case studies. Johnson is the planning consultant to the cities of Manhattan and Three Forks, communities for which he has facilitated and developed master plans, capital improvement plans and community impact analysis. | |

Instructors: Andrew Knudtsen AICP A Principal with EPS, Andrew Knudtsen, is a planner and economist with 19 years of experience addressing the full range of economic issues related to real estate development opportunities. Knudtsen has been involved with city governments on land use planning with the City of Boulder and the City of Vail for a collective 10 years. His later career has focused on Economic and Planning Systems, and analysis renewals and redevelopments within small and micro-politian communities. His areas of expertise include market assessment, feasibility analysis, and public financing strategies. Previous experience includes brownfield redevelopment sites, urban infill sites, urban renewal authority studies, affordable housing opportunities, and town center redevelopment. For previous clients, he has provided strategies to private sector developers addressing market potentials and financing strategies. For public sector clients, he has provided the economic analysis needed to form policy to catalyze targeted areas for redevelopment. This will benefit Montana real estate consumers by providing how to assess the value productions of various land-use typologies. They will explore the land-use affect of various patterns of development in several cities in 4 states, and how their patterns create tax revenue. Attendees will explore policies that drive the revenue standards for various land-use classifications. Instructors: Joseph Minicozzi AICP Joseph Minicozzi, AICP is the principal of Urban3, LLC (U3), a consulting company of downtown Asheville, North Carolina real estate developer Public Interest Projects. Prior to creating U3, he served as the Executive Director for the Asheville Downtown Association. Before moving to Asheville, he was the primary administrator of the Form Based Code for downtown West Palm Beach, FL.
His background and expertise has led him to be well versed in land-use typologies, land use classifications and tax assessment policies. He’s been a lecturer and speaker for over 12 years on these topics, plus various others relating to land use planning and real estate development. Joe is a sought after lecturer on city planning issues.

What is the demographic evolution of today? What are the driving economic industries & distresses? How viable and influential is infrastructure, sprawl & livable communities – or how unviable are they? And what are the emerging realities and housing demands in how our new economy perceives “livable places?”
Adam is a recognized expert in market and financial analysis; positioning, repositioning, and marketing of real estate assets; consumer research; and corporate strategy development. Instructors: Adam Ducker AICP Adam Ducker is a Managing Director based in at Robert Charles Lesser & CO in Washington, D.C., office. Focused on: Master-planned communities; resort and second-home development, including hotel and hospitality products (fractions, timeshare, and PRC); and residential at a wide array of densities and with a variety of recreational amenities (ski, golf, and marina).
Adam joined RCLCO in 1997 as an associate directly after graduate school and learned the trade with the firm. During the early 2000s, he was a principal with a boutique West Coast real estate consulting firm, directing their Northern California office. He is a recognized expert in market and financial analysis; positioning, repositioning, and marketing of real estate assets; consumer research; and corporate strategy development. He works throughout the United States, with particular depth of experience in mountain and coastal environments, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
Adam is a frequent speaker on topics ranging from planned communities to resort recreational development to in-town housing. His writing has been widely published in publications such as Urban Land, California Real Estate Journal, Multifamily Executive, Resort and Recreation, and National Hotel Executive.
