5th Annual ULI Sustainability Symposium: Energy Alternatives for a Sustainable DevelopmentAPA Florida Chapter, Promised Lands SectionEstero, FL This half-day symposium will feature a broad array of speakers touching on the various aspects of sustainability, innovations in clean energy, and its practical implementation in land use planning practice. Redefining transportation systems, energy sources and policy planning to promote local, national and international community health and economic vitality will be discussed. Speakers from public and private sector entities will educate attendees on tools and resources needed to improve policies, operations, and materials for sustainable decisions that save money, generate jobs, and protect the environment. The event will feature best practices case studies from across the state and nation, as well as a panel discussion. Speakers will also discussion retrofitting buildings, and even communities to enhance sustainability.
Instructors: Thomas Mueller is Business Manager for Covanta Lee, Inc. in Fort Myers, Florida. Mr. Mueller has over 12 years of experience in a wide range of disciplines related to the Waste-to-Energy industry and was heavily involved in the first expansion of a Waste-to-Energy facility in the United States since 1995.
Tom joined Covanta Energy in 1997 as the Business Manager for the Lee County, Florida Resource Recovery Facility which was designed built and operated by Ogden Martin now Covanta Energy. Over the past 12 years he has strived to build community awareness of the importance of renewable energy. By working with the Lee County public school system, Edison College and Florida Gulf Coast University the facility now hosts over 90 tours every year totaling more than 2,700 visitors. Building public and media relations, client relations and the financial operation of the facility are also key elements to his career.
Mr. Mueller earned his B.S. degree in Business Management with a minor in finance from The University of Florida and has done graduate work at the University of Central Georgia
Susan Skemp Susan “Sue” Skemp, BSME ’81, joined FAU in March 2008 as Executive Director for the Center for Ocean Energy Technology. Prior to joining FAU, Skemp served as the executive vice president for The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) newly formed Civil Engineering Forum for Innovation (CEFI). Skemp spent 31 years with Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Conn., where she rose through the ranks to become manager of advanced technology planning. In that role, Skemp was responsible for strategic planning of the technology portfolio associated with the company’s aircraft engines, power systems and space propulsion. From 2002 to 2003, Skemp served as the 121st president of ASME, is a Fellow of ASME, and currently sits on the board of directors for the association’s Foundation. She has also served as a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ (AIAA) Public Policy Committee on Aeronautics, and is an Associate Fellow of AIAA. Since October 2004, Skemp was an American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ (ASME) Federal Fellow, in the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), Executive Office of the President, where she served as the policy lead on industrial technology issues as they relate to the President’s Manufacturing Initiative and Manufacturing Innovation Executive Order.
