The Historic Preservation Plan for Anchorage’s Four Original Neighborhoods

APA Alaska ChapterAnchorage, AK

Free event

The Historic Preservation Plan for Anchorage’s Four Original Neighborhoods (HPP) is the first plan of its kind in Anchorage. The funding for the plan came from the Federal Highway Administration in response to potential impacts to the four neighborhoods including Government Hill, Downtown, South Addition and Fairview from the Knik Arm Crossing. Historic preservation planning must first identify the historic resources in an area, whether those are properties, sites, stories, or events. The HPP capitalized on past work completed by early historians at the Municipality, historic societies and groups, and present day community leaders mostly from the four community councils. The plan will be presented to the Planning and Zoning Commission and ultimately the Anchorage Assembly for approval by December 2012.

This session of the APA Alaska Chapter’s Brown Bag Speaker Series will focus on the development of the HPP up to the current Public Hearing Draft phase. The session will focus on how issues and opportunities were used to arrive at a plan that addresses the preservation and management of historic resources, enhances local preservation values, and provides guidance for future impacts to historic resources and landscape features in Anchorage’s Four Original Neighborhoods.
