LEED--ND 101: Practical Strategies for Achieving Sustainability GoalsDenver Regional Council of GovernmentsDenver, CO The Metro Vision Idea Exchange will explore the use of LEED-ND as a functional tool and strategy towards achieving sustainability goals, and will demonstrate how LEED-ND can be utilized as a metric or guiding principle within the planning process or within an aspect of a project.
Representatives who have worked within the public sector will provide context to LEED-ND and explore the benefits, opportunities and challenges facing municipalities in its use. The City of Lakewood will explore opportunities within neighborhood development and transit planning. The City of El Paso will share their experience with LEED-ND within their Comprehensive Plan process and how their City’s smart code addresses some requirement of LEED-ND. Session attendees will be encouraged to share their own experiences and offer advice.

Conor Merrigan is an experienced sustainability consultant focused on helping clients achieve the highest levels of practical sustainability in the built environment. Conor was one of the pioneers and early advocates for the LEED for Neighborhood Development rating system, helping create the accreditation test and leading the effort to develop regional priority credits for the state of Colorado. He has worked on LEED-ND projects nationally and internationally including three of the six Colorado projects registered under the pilot rating system and has worked with various municipalities analyzing aspects of their planning efforts through the LEED-ND lens. In addition to LEED-ND and other sustainability consulting work, Conor has worked in municipal long range planning, affordable housing development, at a nationally recognized sustainability consulting firm and serving as the Senior Manager of the Commercial Buildings Program at the Governor’s Energy Office. He is a Certified Energy Manager, LEED AP, and holds dual masters’ degrees in Urban Planning and Urban Design from the University of Colorado at Denver.
Cliff Lind Cliff Lind has sixteen years of experience with community, recreation and park system planning. This experience has built a strong knowledge of planning techniques and solutions that address the needs of rural communities as well as urban neighborhoods. Cliff’s favorite projects have involved working closely with municipalities, neighborhood groups, and non-profits to explore the application of sustainable development metrics and help communities achieve their livability goals. Currently C2 is helping a number of public and private clients plan sustainable developments and achieve LEED ND certification. Cliff is also serving as the USGBC-CO LEED ND Education Committee chairman. Cliff’s goal as chairman is to help municipalities, developers and consultants discover how to use the LEED ND rating system to establish, measure, and achieve their sustainability objectives. Travis Parker Mr. Parker was appointed Planning Director for Lakewood in August 2011. His previous experience includes over a fifteen years of planning at the city and county level in Virginia, Indiana, Iowa and the District of Columbia. His career has focused on land use planning with an emphasis on writing and interpreting zoning and he has been involved with the update of four different zoning codes.
He has a Masters of public administration from George Washington University a degree in urban planning from Iowa State University. Between 2007 and 2011, Mr. Parker led Washington D.C.'s efforts to review and update its 50-year old zoning ordinance. The new code included a specially-designed program of green site design requirements titled Green Area Ratio that is receiving national attention.
Erich Harris Mr. Harris was hired as the Sustainability Coordinator for the City of Lakewood in March of 2010. His previous experience involves over 14 years of sustainability consulting, architectural design, teaching, and environmental regulatory compliance activities in the United States, China, Europe, and Canada.
He has a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science from Missouri State University and a degree in Architecture from Drury University. Through his interdisciplinary background and experience, Mr. Harris works to explore solutions that improve society, the environment, and our economy by understanding how natural and human made systems interact. Mr. Harris is LEED certified and has worked on numerous LEED projects including several LEED-ND Pilot projects.
