Montclair Walking TourAPA New Jersey ChapterMonclair, NJ Free event The walking tour will take participants on an appropriately 2-mile walk through Montclair Center with the Executive Director of the Center’s Business Improvement District. The tour will feature speakers that will take participants on a comprehensive look into the history of how Church Street became a Great Place in NJ and how it has served as a catalyst for other development throughout the town. Along the tour, participants will hear from the town historian about the history of Church Street and will be given insight about the rich elements of historical architecture that will be encountered along the way. They will also hear from the former Town Planner the history of Church Street’s transformation into a traffic calmed, and thriving pedestrian and business friendly location. From Church Street, the tour route will take participants to see several unique planning ventures within the town and hear about their history/progress from the current Town Planner and/or current project designers. Some of these include:
• CentroVerde at Montclair is a three-building redevelopment site of a former car dealership. The site plans include the installation of a "green roof" on the parking deck on Orange Road, as well as solar panels being installed on the roofs of the three CentroVerde buildings.
• Siena at Montclair is a limited collection of Tuscany-inspired Condominium homes located between Church Street and South Park Street.
• Lackawanna Plaza and Mall is located along Montclair’s main street Bloomfield Avenue. It is built on the site of the old Lackawanna Station for the rail line that used to run through Montclair. There are plans to renovate the Plaza and mall, and the parking lot surrounding the plaza and restore it to give it the look and feel of a train station in time for the station’s centennial anniversary (2013). The design will also be incorporating residential “New York style” lofts.
• NJ TRANSIT Bay Street Station and the surrounding area has been officially designated as a Transit Village by the New Jersey Department of Transportation. This designation recognizes that Montclair has demonstrated a commitment to revitalizing and redeveloping the area around the station into a compact, mixed-use neighborhood with a strong residential component.
• S. Park Street is in the heart of Montclair Center and is in the process of a $1 million redevelopment project that will make it a more inviting place for all users. The project includes making physical improvements that will change how the space is used like narrowing the lanes with a new center median, changing the parking pattern to incorporate wide pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, and roadway resurfacing to incorporate the town’s first ever shared lane markings for bicyclists. The changes also allow for more functional space such as cafe spaces, flex space for outdoor entertainment & art displays, and ample pedestrian zones.
