Facilitation Skills for Scientists and Resource Managers

Workshop objectives:
Participants will be able to design and facilitate meetings more effectively with lower anxiety and better meeting outcomes. This course is intended to be a practical approach to improving group meetings. It is oriented specifically to the needs of those working with natural resources. Participants are presented with a wide array of tools and opportunities to practice new facilitation skills.

Intended audience includes:
Regulatory agency personnel, scientists, non-profit conservation organization personnel, and any others dealing with land use planning, conservation, and natural resource management issues requiring that they organize and implement meetings with workmates, the public, and/or diverse stakeholders.

About the presenter:
Jim Nelson is a retired California Department of Fish and Game Staff Environmental Scientist. He has trained and worked as a mediator and facilitator and has long experience dealing with challenging public meeting opportunities, and helping groups of scientists to organize programs and projects as well as helping many groups with complex technical and organizational issues. He has taught a variety of courses including Facilitation, Public Meeting Techniques, Environmental Negotiations, and Basic CEQA. He has authored technical papers on rare and endangered plants and is still active in habitat conservation efforts.

Important Information

The fee for this 3 day workshop $450; this includes refreshments, lunch each day, and materials. You may pay by credit card via upon registering on our web site or send a check. Checks should be made out to "Elkhorn Slough Foundation" and mailed toVirginia Guhin, c/o ESF; 1700 Elkhorn Road, Watsonville, CA 95076. Registration and Payment Deadline: 5:00 p.m. November 13, 2012.

If you cancel prior to November 13, 2012 any registration fees will be refunded minus a $50 processing fee. If after this date you determine you are unable to attend please let us know so we can accommodate those on our waiting list, but we cannot refund registration fees for cancellation after this date. If you pre-register and do not pay by November 13, 5 p.m., we cannot guarantee you a spot as our waiting list tends to be quite long. You cannot substitute your registration for another person, even in your own organization. We reserve the right to cancel or postpone this event should we receive insufficient registration by November 20; in that event, a full refund will be remitted.
