Lifelong Communities Summit: Transforming the Way We Live TogetherAtlanta Regional CommissionAtlanta, GA A meaningful response to the significant growth of older adults is likely to change the way a region develops, spends transportation and infrastructure dollars, delivers healthcare, promotes services, and trains professionals. During this day-long summit, practicing planners and professionals will present innovative ideas, best practices and their latest research on developing livable communities for aging in place.
Summit participants will have opportunities to network and develop new alliances across a variety of professional planning disciplines including architecture, green building, housing development, public health and transportation. Specific sessions will include strategies to promote citizen participation in planning and encourage the public to use planning resources as well as opportunities to create effective and equitable development.
More Instructors: Laura Keyes AICP Laura Keyes manages the Atlanta Regional Commission Lifelong Communities Planning Initiative. She is President for the Georgia Planning Association and is an AICP-certified planner. She holds a Bachelors of Science from the University of Michigan, a Masters of Science from the School of Agriculture at Michigan State University and a Certificate in Aging through the Institute for Geriatric Social Work from the Boston University School of Social Work. She is a graduate of both the Regional Leadership Institute’s Class of 2010 and Leadership DeKalb’s Class of 2012. She recently published her work on Lifelong Communities in Atlanta in the Journal of Physical and Occupational Therapy in Geriatrics. M. Scott Ball Currently based in Atlanta, GA, Scott Ball has managed several redevelopment efforts along the Gulf Coast for DPZ. Prior to his work with DPZ, Mr. Ball served as The Louisiana Road Home Program's Director of Rebuilding and Construction Assistance, in which capacity he helped start up Louisiana's storm recovery programs. Mr. Ball has been actively engaged in aging and community design issues, and authored the "Aging In Place Tool Kit" and "Lifelong Communities: A Regional Guide to Growth and Longevity" for the Atlanta Regional Commission. He also co-authored the "Land-use and Public Health Toolkit" for the National Association of Local Boards of Health. He is author of “Livable Communities for Aging Populations: Urban Design for Longevity.” Susan Brecht Susan Brecht is considered a national leader in the senior housing industry and has helped to establish appropriate market research standards for all types of senior housing and services. Ms. Brecht is the author of the definitive book on planning seniors' housing, Analyzing Seniors' Housing Markets. She continues to publish articles in the field, including two focusing on CCRCs that have been published by the NIC Seniors Housing and Care Journal since 2008. Ms. Brecht is a frequently invited speaker at state and national conferences. Her hundreds of clients, including both non-profit and for-profit organizations, have spanned 30 states during more than 25 years as a consultant in the senior housing industry. (11 Ratings)
