Development for Planning Variables for Regional Transportation Plans

APA Nevada ChapterLas Vegas, NV

Travel Demand Forecasting (TDF) is an essential tool that the RTC employs to estimate future travel conditions and regional mobility needs. The information generated from the process provides decision makers with the background to determine the future transportation system improvement needs, which are programmed into the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP).

The key input variables to travel demand forecasting include 1) the geographic areas, nature and intensity of the land use (residential, commercial, recreation, public facilities, etc.) and, 2) its associated socio-economic and demographic characteristics (population, employment, household size and school enrollment, etc).

The RTC has been working with the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition (SNRPC) to allocate the population and employment control total estimates developed by the Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) to the Traffic Analysis Zones (TAZs) by horizon year, and ultimately, these variables are input into the TDF model to forecast future traffic conditions.
