National Complete Streets Coalition Laying the Foundation for Complete Streets Workshop Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle ProfessionalsFairbanks, AK Effective complete streets policies help communities routinely create safe and inviting road networks for everyone, including bicyclists, drivers, transit operators and users, and pedestrians of all ages and abilities. The National Complete Streets Coalition is founder of the complete streets movement. It designed the Laying the Foundation for Complete Streets workshop to respond to the needs of state and local agencies and the communities they serve to develop a common foundation of understanding among key stakeholders and develop the political will for changing policy and internal practices to routinely create complete streets networks that serve all users of all ages and abilities. The full-day, highly interactive workshop is customized for 40 key decision makers, stakeholders, and agency professionals. It is led by two National Complete Streets Coalition-trained and nationally known complete streets design and policy experts.
Learning Objectives: The learning objectives of the Laying the Foundation for Complete Streets workshop are to bring together key diverse stakeholders who draft, adopt and implement official and internal policies and procedures to:
1) Build a common understanding of the complete streets concept and approach 2) Explore how complete streets policies can help achieve multiple transportation, health and community goals. 3) Explore examples of complete streets policies adopted by jurisdictions. 4) Compare how traditional and complete streets designs use existing rights-of-way. 5) Give participants the experience of applying complete streets planning tools using local examples. 6) Help the client’s jurisdiction identify specific next steps toward achieving its complete streets goals.
Instructors: Ryan Snyder Ryan Snyder is the President of Ryan Snyder Associates, a transportation planning firm that prepares bicycle plans, pedestrian plans, trail plans, safe routes to school plans, transit plans and smart growth plans. He recently coordinated development of a Model Street Manual for the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health. He is a Federal Highways Administration Pedestrian Safety Design instructor, a National Sustainable Advisor Program instructor, and a member of the Steering Committee for the National Complete Streets Coalition. Snyder teaches a class on Pedestrian and Bicycle Planning to graduate students in the UCLA Urban Planning Department. He is former Vice President of the Los Angeles Board of Transportation Commissioners. He holds an M.A. in Urban Planning and a B.A. in Economics from UCLA. John LaPlante, PE, PTOE John N. LaPlante, PE, PTOE, is currently Director of Traffic Engineering for T.Y. Lin International, working out of their Chicago office. Prior to joining the firm in 1992, Mr. LaPlante had been with the City of Chicago for 30 years in various transportation engineering positions, including Chief City Traffic Engineer and Acting Commissioner of the new Department of Transportation. He has been involved in several national committees (AASHTO Green Book Technical Committee and upcoming Bike Guide, NCUTCD Bicycle Technical Committee and Pedestrian Task Force, and the TRB Pedestrian and Bicycle Committees) and was principal author of the AASHTO Pedestrian Guide. He has taught many courses as part of the FHWA Pedestrian Safety Action Plan and the APBP/US Access Board Designing for Pedestrian Accessibility training. His education includes a BSCE degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology and an MSCE degree at Northwestern University. He is a Fellow of both ITE and ASCE. (1 Ratings)
