AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities – Training CourseHighway Safety Research CenterDallas, TX The American Association of State Highway Transportation Official’s (AASHTO) Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities serves as a key resource for planning and designing bicycle facilities in the U.S. The 2012 edition has significantly expanded the content of the guide, more than doubling in length and going from three chapters (1999 edition) to seven chapters.
This training provides a comprehensive overview of the new content of the guide. It focuses on topic areas in the guide that have been significantly expanded, including the planning chapter; characteristics of bicyclists and common trip types; and the planning and design of bike lanes, shared lanes, bicycle boulevards, off-road paths, and bike routes.

Instructors: Tony Hull Tony Hull has over a decade of experience in bicycle and pedestrian planning. He spent four years at Transit for Livable Communities (TLC) in the Twin Cities, where he was instrumental in the development of analytic tools and the community mode share estimation model for the Federal Non-Motorized Transportation Pilot Program. Prior to his position at TLC, he worked on bicycle and pedestrian issues at the Mid Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC). At Toole Design Group, Tony serves as a technical expert on projects nationwide. William Schultheiss Bill Schultheiss has a broad civil engineering background relating to many facets of engineering planning, design and construction administration. Over the past ten years, Bill has overseen and designed over 250 miles of bike lanes and 8 miles of cycle tracks. He is a nationally recognized expert in bicycle and pedestrian facility design and effectively communicates multi-modal engineering concepts and solutions that gain support from communities. As an active member of the Bicycle Technical Committee and the Pedestrian Task Force of the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (NCUTCD), Bill stays on the forefront of emerging engineering practices.
