Innovative Cities Lecture – Century City: A Brownfield Story
University of Wisconsin-MilwaukeeMilwaukee, WI
Free event
This seminar will provide an overview of the City of Milwaukee’s effort to transform one of the state’s largest brownfield sites into the Century City Business Park. The former A.O. Smith/Tower Automotive complex operated for almost a century on 150 acres in the heart of the city. It contained more than four million square feet of industrial buildings and related infrastructure. Since 2009 the City has focused on reinventing 84 acres of this site so it can once again play a role Milwaukee’s economic future. The City’s project manager and the primary environmental consultant for this project will provide an overview of the Pre-Development phase. This phase incorporates extensive environmental cleanup, large-scale planning efforts, and leveraging an array of financial resources including brownfield grants. The project also includes a successful effort to engage small and minority-owned businesses in the transformation process.
