weTable Users' ConferenceTexas A&M UniversityHouston, TX Join us for this historic gathering of weTable users to learn from experts and peers in the use of low-cost, do-it-yourself touchtables that can enhance and improve community planning and decision making. The tool is a non-proprietary tool built using off-the-shelf equipment. Learn how to build and use a weTable and get hands-on exposure to a range of tools and techniques compatible with the weTable, including mapping, group brainstorming tools, and 2D and 3D visualization tools. The training agenda will include weTable case studies, as well as presentations on the future directions of participatory planning and technology. This training is a must for programs that want to improve public outreach and create more dynamic, engaging workshops. AICP members will be able to return to their home programs with the skills to set up the weTable in local workshops and will have a foundation of knowledge to develop innovative applications of the weTable in planning workshops.
This two-day workshop will be held at the historic Rice Lofts in Downtown Houston, organized by the Texas Sea Grant program of Texas A&M University, PlaceMatters and the Delaware Sea Grant program of the University of Delaware. Attendees to the Users' conference will include coastal planners, environmental resource managers, educators, public outreach professionals, and hazard management agencies from across the country. Financial support for this event was provided by NOAA, U.S. EPA, and the Ford Foundation. Registration and logistics information for the conference can be found on the conference website.
More Instructors: Steven Mikulencak AICP Mr. Mikulencak is a program coordinator and certified planner for the Texas Coastal Watershed Program of Texas A&M University. He works from Houston, TX and specializes in facilitation and planning tools for local decision-makers. He has worked on comprehensive plans, zoning, design guidelines, and GIS analyses for local governments. He now develops planning and outreach programs for TX coastal communities using the weTable and GIS modeling tools. Edward Lewandowski Mr. Lewandowski is a Coastal Communities Development Specialist and has lead the effort to educate planners, local officials, and citizens on coastal planning issues using the weTable and GIS modeling tools. Most recently, he has begun developing educational programs on sustainable development, open space protection, and coastal resiliency planning. Dr. John Jacob Dr. John Jacob is Director of the Texas Coastal Watershed Program of Texas A&M University and is based in Houston, TX. Dr. Jacob oversees programs for urban planning, citizen participation, wetland ecology, and watershed planning. He has conducted ground breaking research on wetland hydrologic connectivity and educates the public about the connections between land use, environmental health, and quality of life. Dr. Bill McGowan Dr. McGowan is an Extension community development agent with the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension in Sussex County. He is co-director of the University of Delaware's Sustainable Coastal Communities Program. He works with communities and organizations interested in addressing community engagement, strategic planning, and public workshops. Ken Snyder Ken is a nationally recognized expert on a broad range of technical and non-technical tools for community design and decision-making. Ken sits on the Board of the National Charrette Institute and is past Chair of the American Planning Association's Technology Division. Ken is CEO and president of Placematters. Amy Anderson Ms. Anderson is Director of Planning Services at Placeways. She is an expert in land-use planning analysis using CommunityViz software and 3D visualization tools. As Placeways' lead planning consultant, she provides clients with professional services including consulting, project implementation, and technical training. Her unique skills combine advanced planning analysis with a large arsenal of graphical and mapping analysis capabilities that she applies to help clients and the public understand important concepts and make informed decisions.
