GIS for Watershed Analysis: AdvancedUC Davis ExtensionDavis, CA Geographic Information Systems (GIS) offer valuable problem solving and visualization tools for understanding watershed processes. Together with the intermediate course, these two workshops will give researchers, planners and land/resource managers the spatial analysis skills they need to integrate field data with watershed-scale variables and gain a better perspective of the upstream processes and circumstances that may be driving observed conditions.
In this advanced-level course, learn how to perform advanced raster queries and calculations and how to conduct advanced manipulation of Digital Elevation Models. You will be introduced to Python programming and the implementation of watershed generating algorithms and will learn the attribution of vector data from raster analysis.
By the end of the workshop, you will be able to generate watershed boundaries and stream networks, as well as stream order. Additional exercises will focus on the integration of reach-level habitat inventories, fish and macroinvertebrate surveys, and water quality parameters into a watershed GIS. You will also become familiar with the implementation of various ArcGIS tools and extensions, as well as advanced concepts in watershed analysis.
More Instructors: Joshua Viers Joshua Viers, Ph.D., has 15 years of professional GIS experience. He is an associate research scientist in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy and associate director of the UC Davis Center for Watershed Sciences. His ongoing watershed science work includes: GIS modeling and analysis of watersheds, assessing the ecological effects of land use activities on riparian and aquatic habitats and assisting state and federal agencies with applied decision support systems for resource management.
