2013 Speaker Series – Maryland Sustainable Communities Program

APA National Capital Area ChapterUpper Marlboro, MD

Free event

Maryland’s Sustainable Communities Act of 2010 is a great step toward reinvestment and revitalization in the State’s existing communities. It targets various State agencies’ resources into a place-based revitalization strategy that promotes social and economic opportunity and environmentally responsible development. Upon receiving a Sustainable Communities designation, local governments and other stakeholders have the opportunity to apply to various funding programs, a “revitalization toolbox” if you will, that can financially assist with revitalizing these communities in a sustainable manner.

Multiple local governments in the state have embraced the Sustainable Communities agenda and have adopted local plans and implementation strategies that achieve sustainability goals. This session will provide an opportunity for planners to hear how local planning agencies have devised implementation strategies to achieve Sustainable Community goals and objectives as well as gain a better understanding of the State’s sustainability goals.

Participants will learn:
1. Learn about the Maryland Sustainable Communities Program.
2. Gain ideas about how to utilize and maximize State resources to achieve community revitalization goals
3. Gather ideas for Sustainable Communities planning and implementation strategies
