Municipal Outreach Webinar Series: Food Systems PlanningDelaware Valley Regional Planning CommissionPhiladelphia, PA Free event This webinar will cover Food Systems Planning. It is targeted at local government officials and planners. The introduction will describe what food systems planning is, what local governments should consider, and what tools and resources are available. The second section will be an overview of the national growth of Food Systems Planning and farmers markets. The third section of the webinar will focus on farmland preservation and agricultural zoning in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, including highlighting several local case studies. The webinar will conclude with a 15-minute question and answer session.
This webinar is part of DVRPC’s Municipal Outreach Program. Since municipal governments have the primary authority and responsibility to implement policies, this webinar will introduce local officials and citizens to food systems planning techniques that will be useful in their communities. This webinar will cover the fundamentals of food system planning, the benefits, the best practices, and several case studies.
The American Planning Association released a policy guide on Community and Regional Food Planning in 2007 (http://www.planning.org/policy/guides/adopted/food.htm). This webinar is designed to further participants’ knowledge on the subject.
Attendees will learn what a food system is, what food system planning is, what tools can be used for food system planning, how to encourage sustainable agriculture, how to improve access to healthy food, how to support the local food economy, how to make informed decisions, and where to go to locate additional resources.
More Instructors: Thomas Daniels Tom Daniels is a Professor of City and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches courses on Land Use Planning, Environmental Planning, Growth Management, and Land Preservation. For nine years, Tom managed the farmland preservation program in Lancaster County, PA, where he lives. Tom has published widely on farmland protection issues and is the co-author of Holding Our Ground: Protecting America’s Farms and Farmland, Island Press, 1997.
Tom is a Senior Contributing Editor for Farmland Preservation Report, a national newsletter. He is a frequent consultant to state and local governments and land trusts. Tom participated in the APA Food Ethics webinar in November 2012 and the APA Farmland Preservation webinar in the spring of 2009. Tom holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Oregon State University.
Alison Hastings AICP Alison Hastings is the Manager of the Office of Strategic Partnerships at the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC). DVRPC is the regional planning forum for the Greater Philadelphia region, with a focus on transportation, land use, the environment and economic growth. Alison manages DVRPC's Regional Food System Planning project among other projects. This program illustrates the Commission's commitment to combining innovative ideas with traditional regional planning processes. DVRPC's Regional Food System Planning work has received national attention and is often cited as a best practice. In October 2011, DVRPC’s Eating Here: Greater Philadelphia’s Food System Plan was recognized by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association with a planning excellence award. Alison currently serves on Philadelphia’s Food Policy Advisory Council. She is also a board member of the Pennsylvania Hunger Action Center and the Neighborhood Gardens Association, a community land trust.
Christina Arlt Christina Arlt is a planner in the Office of Smart Growth at DVRPC. She also serves as DVRPC’s Municipal Outreach Coordinator. Christina has experience working on Environmental Resource Inventories, Farmland Preservation Plans, Open Space & Recreation Plans, Transit Oriented Development plans, and waterfront plans. Prior to working at DVRPC, she worked in the Planning & Zoning Office for Warwick Township in Bucks County, and spent a year as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant in Hamburg, Germany. She obtained her Masters in City Planning with a focus on Land Use and Environmental Planning at the University of Pennsylvania, where she also obtained a Certificate in GIS and Spatial Analysis. Her undergraduate degree is in Urban & Environmental Studies from Franklin & Marshall College. (15 Ratings)
