Learn how to integrate health policy into comprehensive planning through the development of a Health Element into your community’s plan. Inserting health considerations into planning policies and land development regulations is an effective method that allows local governments to implement policies which lead to sustainable, healthy communities providing for a range of practices that include: a wide range of transportation needs, access to parks and recreational spaces as well as safe routes to school. This session will include a presentation by Kathleen Walston Pagan who, in conjunction with participants from the community, was instrumental in the development of one of the first comprehensive health element to be adopted by a local government in the State of Florida. Ms. Pagan’s presentation will discuss the history and development of the element and then a participatory discussion will ensue. Participants will be encouraged to present their thoughts, questions and suggestions concerning funding and implementation ideas. Participants will learn:
Why it is important to include health in the discussion of any planning policy, project or program
The different options to provide decision makers with information about how to discuss human health in the context of planning
Design elements that support the development of healthy communities
How to focus the conversation about project development processes to support healthy, sustainable lifestyles
The class will be useful for land use and transportation planners, urban designers and community activists interested in building and retrofitting communities to make the healthy choice the easy choice
