Andrew Herscher, Associate Professor, University at Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Andrew Herscher received his PhD from Harvard University in 2002. His work explores the architectural and urban media of political violence, cultural memory, collective identity, and social justice, focusing on modern and contemporary Central and Eastern Europe. He has been particularly involved in the Balkans, where he has worked for the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia as an investigator and expert witness on the war-time destruction of cultural heritage; directed the Department of Culture of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo; and co-founded and co-directed the NGO, Kosovo Cultural Heritage Project, which has carried out the protection and restoration of several historic works of architecture . His scholarly work has appeared in such publications as Architectural History, Assemblage, Grey Room, Harvard Design Magazine, Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, and Oxford Art Journal. His book, Violence Taking Place: The Architecture of the Kosovo Conflict, was published by Stanford University Press (2010), in the series, "Cultural Memory in the Present." At the University of Michigan, he is jointly appointed to the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, and, until 2009, the International Institute.

Dennis Maher, Clinical Assistant Professor, University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning. Dennis Maher holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University and is the 2012-2013 Artist-in Residence at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY. Maher has been exploring critical approaches to demolition, renovation, and restoration since 2003. His work has involved the harvesting of discarded building materials from sites of demolition, and the construction of aggregate environments of urban waste. Symbiotically linking acts of un-building and re-building, Maher’s projects investigate the spatial, material, and environmental consequences of architectural un-making. Exhibitions by Maher have been presented at such venues as Galeria Antoni Pinyol in Reus, Spain; Black and White Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; Superfront in Los Angeles, CA; The Carnegie Center in Covington, KY; and Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo, NY. His work has been featured in Architect Magazine, on the national radio program, "Smart City Radio," and on PBS television’s "Going Green" series. Published writings by Maher include "Towards Un-building," in 306090 Sustain and Develop, and "The Nightworks" in Unplanned, Research and Experiments at the Urban Scale. Maher is the recipient of a MacDowell Colony Fellowship for 2008, the Black and White Project Space Prize for 2010, and a NYSCA Independent Projects Grant for 2010.
