Portraits in Design: Daniel H. BurnhamNational Building MuseumWashington, DC Architect Daniel H. Burnham (1846-1912) is arguably the father of the city planning movement in the United States. He was the mastermind behind the design of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and was figured prominently in the bestselling novel-style history, "The Devil in the White City." Judith McBrien, director of the film Make No Little Plans, examines Burnham’s work, which includes his large scale plans for Chicago and Washington, D.C.
Participants will learn about Burnham's role in fostering the City Beautiful movement in American planning and urban design.
Participants will learn about Burnham's "The Plan of Chicago" which laid out plans for the future of the city and was the first comprehensive plan for the controlled growth of an American city.
Participants will learn about Burnham's contributions to the "McMillan Plan" in Washington, D.C., which led to the completion of the overall design of the National Mall.
More Instructors: Judith Paine McBrien Judith Paine McBrien, Director/Producer of The Archimedia Workshop NFP, is the Director of the Daniel Burnham Film Project. For over 15 years she has written, directed and produced programs about architecture, history and urban design for public television broadcast as well as for organizations concerned with the arts and the environment including the Art Institute of Chicago, the American Institute of Architects, the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust and the Urban Land Institute. At Perspectives Media, she produced the award-winning 5-part series Skyline: Chicago for public television broadcast about Chicago’s history, development, and urban design. In 2000 she wrote and produced a Centerpiece Chicago Story, Daniel Burnham: The Power of Dreams, for Chicago public television station WTTW. McBrien holds a master's degree in architectural history from Columbia University and an MBA from the Yale School of Management. She serves on the Advisory Board of the Gene Siskel Film Center of the Art Institute of Chicago. (7 Ratings)
