Portraits in Design: Daniel H. Burnham

National Building MuseumWashington, DC

Architect Daniel H. Burnham (1846-1912) is arguably the father of the city planning movement in the United States. He was the mastermind behind the design of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and was figured prominently in the bestselling novel-style history, "The Devil in the White City." Judith McBrien, director of the film Make No Little Plans, examines Burnham’s work, which includes his large scale plans for Chicago and Washington, D.C.

Participants will learn about Burnham's role in fostering the City Beautiful movement in American planning and urban design.

Participants will learn about Burnham's "The Plan of Chicago" which laid out plans for the future of the city and was the first comprehensive plan for the controlled growth of an American city.

Participants will learn about Burnham's contributions to the "McMillan Plan" in Washington, D.C., which led to the completion of the overall design of the National Mall.
