Complete Streets Implementation WorkshopInstitute of Transportation Engineers Educational FoundationBoston, MA This 3.5-contact hour workshop provides planners, engineers and other members of the professional design community with technical complete streets design implementation tools, and the foundation necessary to more routinely create complete streets networks that serve all users.
At the conclusion of the session participants will be able to:
1. Describe the benefits of adopting an effective Complete Streets policy and deploying four strategies for its effective implementation: 1.1. Training staff to balance the needs of all users 1.2. Revising internal procedures to accommodate all users 1.3. Revising design manuals, and 1.4. Analyzing performance data related to all users. 2. Examine design research, best practices, standards, guides and technical tools that help design professionals balance and meet the needs of all users. 3. Describe technical design flexibility within current design guides and standards. 4. Begin to assess and identify appropriate next steps toward adoption of an effective complete streets policy in their jurisdictions, or more effectively implementing their existing complete streets policies.
More Instructors: John LaPlante John LaPlante, PE, PTOE, is currently Chief Traffic Engineer with TY Lin International, after having served 30 years with the City of Chicago Departments of Public Works and Transportation as City Traffic Engineer and Commissioner of Transportation. Mr. LaPlante is on a number of national design committees, including the AASHTO Green Book Committee where he
chaired the subcommittee on the preparation of Chapter 9 (Intersections) and the Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities (1999). All told, Mr. LaPlante has over 40 years of experience in the planning and design of urban transportation facilities.
