On May 21-22, 1909, 43 planners met in Washington, D.C., at the first National Planning Conference. This event is considered to be the birth of the planning movement in America. On Thursday, May 21, 2009, the National Building Museum and the American Planning Association recognized the 100th anniversary of this 1909 conference in a symposium that looks at the past, present, and future of planning.

The symposium, 1909-2109: Sustaining the Lasting Value of American Planning, brought together federal officials, planners, academics, and grassroots advocates who focused on the achievements of America's first 100 years of planning and designing sustainable communities. They explored today's planning challenges and presented solutions for designing the next 100 years of green communities, and ways in which citizens can effect social and environmental change in their neighborhoods, while providing real world solutions and advocacy.

APA President Bruce Knight, FAICP, will introduce Ambassador Barco, who will deliver the opening keynote address. Following her remarks, APA Past President Robert Hunter, FAICP, will present Ambassador Barco with the 2009 APA President’s Award for Meritorious Service.
The Honorable Adolfo Carrión, Jr., Director of the White House Office of Urban Affairs
Mr. Carrión will deliver the closing keynote address following his introduction by APA Executive Director and CEO Paul Farmer, FAICP.
