China Asks APA to Help Plan Earthquake Recovery

The Chinese government has asked APA to help outline a three-year strategy for regional earthquake recovery and nationwide improvement of construction and planning policies in order to mitigate the consequences of future natural disasters. James Schwab, AICP, who heads APA's Planning and Hazards Research Center, and William Siembieda, AICP, of California Polytechnic State University, will travel to Beijing at the end of June for briefings, followed by a visit to Szechuan Province and its capital, Chengdu, where damage was extensive. Both planners have considerable experience in planning for hazard mitigation and disaster recovery. They will join APA Director of Outreach and International Programs Jeff Soule, FAICP, and Senior Advisor Liu Yuan.
