APA Planning & the Black Community DivisionLos Angeles, CA
This is professional development Forum organized by APA's Planning and the Black Community Division and the University of Southern California's School of Public Policy.
It consists of two engaging moderated discussions on how communities across the nation are planning for the diverse new economy and aging population. It will include PBCD's Scholarship luncheon address by a keynote speaker. Registration $30 (students $15) includes lunch.
The first session will be moderated discussion by AARP on the impacts of land use and transportation planning on Race, Class and Housing Choices for an aging population and how communities are dealing with these challenges. Attendees will learn best practices for providing housing Choices for aging population.
The second presentation will be a facilitated discussion about Black Churches and the role they play in revitalizing low income minority communities. Attendees will learn how African American churches engage in economic development through housing, commercial ventures, financing and by providing basic social services which creates economic prosperity. They will hear about case studies from South Los Angeles.
The last presentation will be a keynote address by Dr. Malo Andre Huston of University of California, Berkeley who will talk about the Impacts of Housing Revitalization on Community Development. He will discuss the impacts of housing revitalization and community development on neighborhood residents’ health, education, and economic outcomes. Attendees will hear about best practices of Housing revitalization based on his multi-year research project in partnership with Mercy Housing, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and UCSF Medical School.
This will be the luncheon address.
