Housing and Transportation for the Boomers and BeyondAPA Ohio ChapterColumbus, OH This webinar will provide attendees the latest national and state data on housing and transportation relevant to an aging population.
Hear how disability rates, family structures, foreclosure rates, and the age of homes have shifted in the decade, as older households adapt to face new and continuing challenges. Learn what’s being done to address issues of affordability. Understand the latest travel patterns of those 65+ as observed in the 2009 National Household Travel Survey. Hear what public and private sector strategies AARP’s planning experts recommend for the creation of lifelong communities.
During the webinar, presenters will show their new 6.5 minute video entitled, “Active Living for All Ages: Creating Communities Around Transit,” and discuss how the voices of older adults living in Arlington, VA’s TOD neighborhoods can help win the argument for walkable, mixed-use communities.
Instructors: Jana Lynott AICP Jana Lynott, AICP, is the Senior Strategic Policy Advisor for Transportation and Livable Communities in AARP’s Public Policy Institute. She manages AARP’s transportation research agenda and is responsible for developing the content of the Livable Communities chapter of the AARP Policy Book, adopted by the AARP Policy Council and Board. Her research covers a broad array of planning and policy issues, including street design for all users, the travel patterns of older adults, transit service needs, and older driver safety. Ms. Lynott represents AARP on the national steering committee of the National Center on Senior Transportation and America Walks. As a land use and transportation planner, she brings practical expertise to the research field. Ms. Lynott serves on the Arlington County, Virginia Transportation Commission and the Virginia Chapter of the APA’s legislative committee.
Rodney Harrell Rodney Harrell, PhD, is the Senior Strategic Policy Advisor for Housing and Livable Communities in AARP’s Public Policy Institute. In his position, he is responsible for developing AARP’s policy on housing and livable communities issues, and he also manages the housing research agenda and conducts independent research. Dr. Harrell has made numerous public appearances to discuss issues of housing, aging, and livable communities, and has been a featured speaker for audiences across the United States and in other countries. Dr. Harrell was graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the honors program at Howard University, earned dual master’s degrees in Public Affairs and in Urban and Regional Planning from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University, and received a Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Design from the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. Harrell is Vice-Chair for Policy for the Planning and the Black Community Division of APA.
