The Heartland Economic Development Course (HEDC) is accredited by the International Economic Development Council. Following mandated national curriculum, the HEDC offers four days of intensive training from experienced economic developers and planners. This course is appropriate for practitioners with less than 10 years of experience in the field.

HEDC offers participants a unique economic development learning opportunity. Participants work in teams on case studies incorporating a host of planning & development related issues and challenges.
HEDC also features a Heartland One to One professional consultation program. Participants can pre-schedule a one to one meeting with our faculty and "seasoned" professionals throughout the course and find answers to specific challenges.
Participants also have a unique opportunity to learn "on site" real estate and community development strategies. One afternoon will be dedicated to a tour of the area’s development success stories. Along the way, hear from experts on efforts being taken to shape the region's growth.
Registration fee- $960 prior to 3/22/2013, $1,005 after 3/22/2013
The registration fee for the Heartland Economic Development Course includes the Welcoming Dinner (Sunday), Breakfasts for four days (Monday-Thursday), Lunch for three days (Monday-Wednesday), break service (Monday-Thursday), and Dinner on Tuesday.

LaDene Bowen
LaDene is the Heartland Course Director as well as Associate Director for the Institute for Decision Making (IDM) at the University of Northern Iowa. She earned her CEcD (certified economic developer) designation in 1993, and in 2005, she was recognized as a fellow (FM) for her outstanding service to the field of economic development.
Ronnie Bryant
As president and CEO of the Charlotte Regional Partnership, Ronnie Bryant promotes the 16-county Charlotte USA region as a premier location for businesses considering expansion or relocation. Bryant has a proven track record of establishing and implementing successful economic development programs. He specializes in existing industry expansion and retention, with a strong emphasis on regionalism and marketing.
Eric Canada
Eric Canada is a recognized authority on business retention and economic development attraction marketing. He managed the largest R&E research cooperative in North America with over 400 contributing members. Since 1995, more than 13,500 economic development professionals and community leaders have participated in his advanced courses and workshops on business retention and marketing.
Maureen Collins-Williams
Maureen Collins-Williams is the director of business development and incubation at the University of Northern Iowa. Since 2001, she has also served as the director of the regional business center, an entrepreneurship outreach facility of Business and Community Services, providing outreach services to thousands of Iowa entrepreneurs each year.
Mike Downing
Mike Downing is the Deputy Director for the Missouri Department of Economic Development (DED). Downing has a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Bachelor’s degree from Arkansas State University. He is a Certified Economic Developer (“CEcD”), and was selected as the Economic Developer of the Year by the Missouri Economic Development Council in 1999.
Mark Grey
Mark Grey, Ph.D. is professor of anthropology at the University of Northern Iowa. He is also Director of the Iowa Center for Immigrant Leadership and Integration. He has published extensively in academic journals on immigration in the Midwest and is co-author of the forthcoming book, Postville: USA: Surviving Diversity in Small-Town America.
Barbara Hake
Barbara manages the business recruitment operations for the Kansas Department of Commerce. She has worked in business recruitment and expansion for 15 years and has coordinated successful projects with key names such as Farmers Insurance, Quintiles, Kiewit Power, Interstate Bakeries, Royal Caribbean and Capital One. Barbara is a Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) through the International Economic Development Council and an Economic Development Finance Professional through the National Development Council.
Brian Starner
Brien M. Starner is a 25-year career veteran in economic development with experience in public, corporate and public/private organizations. Brien is currently President of Blue Springs Economic Development Corporation, a public/private membership development organization located in Blue Springs, Missouri.
