The 5th Annual Carolina Thread Trail Forum provides an opportunity for planners to learn from subject matter experts regarding greenway and trail planning, design, construction,and maintenance. Each of the concurrent sessions provide participants with an opportunity to look at trails as more than a recreational component of a municipality, but, an important ingredient for a healthier and more sustainable community. NC DENR State Trails in a collaborative effort with padd ... more Weaving the Blue Threads Paddle trails are an important component of the Carolina Thread Trail network. NC DENR State Trails in a collaborative effort with paddling groups and State Agencies developed set of standards for both paddle trail access sites and paddle trails for all of North Carolina. This session will provide an introduction to the Blueway planning and design process, levels of access and integration with land based trails. This session will also provide and interactive design exercise based on issues likely to be encountered on Carolina Thread Trail projects with paddle trail components. The Blueway exercise will allow participants to apply what they learned in the first session to plan and allocate funding along a river corridor in pursuit of Blueway status. The exercise will include both land trails, paddle trail and river access components. Instructors: Iona Thomas AICP Iona L. Thomas, AICP manages Stewart’s Greenway Design Group and brings over 20 years of transportation and planning experience, focused primarily bicycle and pedestrian planning and design of greenways and pedestrian bridges. Iona is proud to also chair the North Carolina East Coast Greenway Committee. She is a passionate supporter of greenways and believes they play an important role in economic development, creating healthy communities, providing alternate modes of transportation and connecting people with nature.
