Newby Island Resource Recovery Park TourAPA California Chapter, Northern SectionSan Jose, CA Tour the cutting edge Newby Island Resource Recovery Park in San Jose, believed to be the largest recycling facility in the world. Learn details about advanced City recycling programs, how they are implemented and coordinated, and how companies like Republic Services and HMH are doing well by doing good.
The renovation of an existing 80,000 square foot building and addition of a state of the art sorting system and equipment enable the facility to process as much as 420,000 tons of waste per year. The facility houses organics recycling, construction waste recycling and a “Green Energy” generation system and will help us achieve our goal of “zero waste” for homes and businesses. The tour will include the new recycling facility as well as the landfill operation.

Instructors: Carl Mennie Carl Mennie joined Republic’s Newby Island Recycling team in 2011 as Division Manager, and has responsibilities in the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and Composting facility. He has played a key role in Republic’s expansion of commercial recycling programs in the San Jose market. Along with his participation in the design of Republic’s largest MRF, he and his team were responsible for the operational start-up of the 110 ton per hour recycling system, capable of processing dry and wet commercial waste. Carl started his career with Republic Services in 2001 as the Division Controller and was part of the start-up team that rolled out automated single-stream recycling collection services to the City of Salinas. In 2004, he was promoted to Division Controller at Republic’s operations in San Mateo County, one of the company’s largest business units with annual revenues of $122 million and 370 employees. He transitioned into an operational role with the company in 2009 as the Assistant General Manager for the business unit, and had direct responsibility for the transfer station and MRF facilities.
Carl earned his BA in Economics from Stanford University in 1995. Prior to Republic Services, he held finance positions for Household Credit Services and Enterprise Rent A Car.
Frank Turk Frank Turk began his career at Republic Services in December 2008 in the company’s Engineering Management Trainee program where he gained exposure to a variety of landfill and transfer station operations around the west region. In 2010, Frank joined Newby Island as an Environmental Specialist managing environmental compliance and infrastructure development. In 2011, he was promoted to Environmental Manager for both Ox Mountain Landfill and Newby Island Landfill. Frank has done an outstanding job solving difficult problems in a complex environment. Frank’s experience in a diverse scope of operational and engineering responsibilities has made him a valued asset for Newby Island where he has recently been promoted to Division Manager. Frank earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of California. (5 Ratings)
