Panhandle Habitat Series: Rivers and FloodplainsApalachicola NERREastpoint, FL This class covers the ecology, geology, and natural history of the rivers and floodplains of the Florida Panhandle with the main focus on the Apalachicola River and Floodplain. Other types of river systems will also be discussed. Learn about the rich diversity of animals and plants found in the river and surrounding floodplain of the Apalachicola system and their connection to the bay. Be prepared to spend part of the day in the classroom and part in the field on our boat exploring the river and walking in the floodplain.
These professional level classes are intended for coastal decision makers such as consultants, ecologists, park rangers, planners, permitting staff, ecotour operators, elected officials, developers, volunteer organizations and concerned citizens.
All classes will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Eastern Time) at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve Nature Center.
Registration is required: You MUST register no later than five days before the class.
Cost: $10.00 per person per class payable to Friends of the Reserve.

Margo is currently an Environmental Specialist at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve. Her job as a Coastal Training Specialist involves working directly with the Coastal Training Program (CTP) Coordinator and program partners to coordinate activities, develop workshops and trainings, and facilitate technical assistance. This position works cooperatively with local, county, regional, state and federal level decision makers, both private and public, to provide science-based information relevant to decisions affecting coastal resources and educating about and encouraging low impact development (LID) and other best management practices in the Reserve's watershed through science-based outreach and education; assisting with identifying other training providers, potential audiences and training needs in the region; maintaining electronic mailing lists, databases, and email notification process and assisting with the expansion of the CTP web presence and capability. This position also involves helping with the recruitment, training and supervision of volunteers who will work with the CTP.
Margo has approximately twelve years of environmentally related academic and employment experience encompassing marine policy, resource management and science, fisheries, environmental compliance, laboratory and field work. Positions included Regulatory & Administrative Specialist with Multi-Species Development Holdings, LLC, St. Paul, Alaska; Regulatory & Administrative Specialist; Environmental Investigator; Environmental Quality Specialist with Environmental Health, Public Health & Engineering; Chemistry Assistant; Microbial Research Assistant; and Research Diver, Artificial Reef Project.
Matthew Anderson Mathew is an Environmental Specialist at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve. His job as an Education Specialist with our Education Programs involves developing and delivering education programs for all grade levels and ages. He also conducts bird surveys and assists with other projects related to research, restoration and education. Matthew has a broad background with an Associates degree in biology and Bachelor studies in Wildlife Management. He moved from St. Louis where he worked with construction and historic home restoration and volunteered as an instructor at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. As a volunteer he taught curriculum based environmental education programs for grades K-8, as well as adult programs. He also volunteered in the interpretive program and ecosystem restoration projects at Shaw Nature Reserve. He previously worked as an educator at the Youth Sciences Institute in California with grades K-12. This work included curriculum development and environmental education. Matthew also has over eight years of experience in field research and research training, especially relating to tropical birds and studying habitats and forest vegetation. Currently the Coastal Training Program Coordinator at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research. The program provides training and technical assistance to decision-makers, including elected and appointed officials, planners, consultants, non-profit organizations and associations, ecotour operators, and others who make decisions that affect coastal resources. Priority topics include growth and land use issues, especially relating to watershed planning and stormwater management, wastewater alternatives, coastal hazards, ecotourism, and sustainable practices (Green Lodging, Clean Marine, Green Building).
Prior experience as planner, educator and environmental specialist in the areas of coastal management; comprehensive planning; coastal, marine and upland ecology; environmental science; and teaching gifted students. Last job was with the Florida Coastal Management Program for 10 years as a planner and environmental specialist. The work included review, comments and interagency coordination for Federal Consistency and comprehensive plan amendments and updates.
Professional Development and Certifications: Florida Teacher Certification in Science, Biology and Gifted. Certified facilitator/instructor for Florida Master Naturalist Program, Project WET, Project WILD and Aquatic WILD, S.E.A.S. and several other programs. Completed training for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Stormwater Management Inspector Certification for stormwater, sedimentation and erosion control. Completed training and requirements to be a certified instructor for the Green Industries Best Management Practices training and Instructor training. Currently certified as a Senior Instructor for this program which targets landscape and lawn maintenance professionals.
President of Florida Marine Science Educators Association 2003-2005 and Panhandle Regional Director before that and currenly, as well as conference chair for the 2004 and 2005 statewide Conferences.
