AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities – Training CourseHighway Safety Research CenterBoston, MA The American Association of State Highway Transportation Official’s (AASHTO) Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities serves as a key resource for planning and designing bicycle facilities in the U.S. The 2012 edition has significantly expanded the content of the guide, more than doubling in length and going from three chapters (1999 edition) to seven chapters.
This training provides a comprehensive overview of the new content of the guide. It focuses on topic areas in the guide that have been significantly expanded, including the planning chapter; characteristics of bicyclists and common trip types; and the planning and design of bike lanes, shared lanes, bicycle boulevards, off-road paths, and bike routes.

Instructors: Jennifer Toole AICP Jennifer Toole is the founder and President of Toole Design Group. She has over 20 years of experience planning and designing multi-modal transportation systems. As a certified planner with a degree in Landscape Architecture, Jennifer has a strong background in urban design and a keen understanding of how to design streets that work for all users. Jennifer served as the Principal Investigator for the 2012 edition of the AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities and co-authored Complete Streets guidelines for Dallas, TX and Boston, MA. She has been involved in numerous projects of national significance for the Federal Highway Administration, AASHTO and NHTSA, and was awarded the Professional of the Year award by the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals. Nick Jackson -- Nick Jackson is the Director of Toole Design Group’s Boston, MA office. He has over 12 years of experience in planning and designing sustainable transportation systems. Nick is highly regarded for his ability to build consensus around solutions for complex urban transportation problems. He recently led a project team of planners, engineers and architects to craft comprehensive new street design guidelines for the City of Boston – a first in that city’s history. Nick’s also played key roles in the emergence of Chicago and Boston as top-rated bicycling cities. Nick was a co-author of the AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities. Prior to joining Toole Design Group, Nick served as Deputy Director of the Active Transportation Alliance in Chicago, IL. (7 Ratings)
