Transforming our Cities: Catalytic Case Studies for Smart Growth in Portland NCSU-FEOPRaleigh, NC Free event Speaking will be landscape architect Carol Mayer-Reed, FASLA, from Portland Oregon. In her lecture, “Transforming Our Cities: Catalytic Case Studies for Smart Growth in Portland." Carol will present examples of Mayer/Reed’s recent work that are making a difference in the urban form of Portland, Oregon. Carol is a tireless advocate for the quality of the built environment. The case studies she will present case studies are examples of how landscape architects are transforming public spaces and people’s lives. She will also share her forecast of expanded markets for landscape architecture and urban design services. Learning objective include:
1. Learn about case studies regarding mass-transit related design, including light rail stations addressing needs of pedestrians, bridges, connections to trails and the process of community meetings with varied constituents.
2. Learn about case studies regarding streetscapes and pedestrian projects which enhanced the city's walkable communities.
3. Learn about case studies regarding open space and park master plans meeting community needs for public recreation and incorporating sustainable stormwater features.
4. Learn about the market and need for urban design and planning services and how designers and planners can transform the lives of people in community settings.
More Instructors: Carol Mayer-Reed, FASLA Carol Mayer-Reed is partner-in-charge of landscape architecture and urban design at Mayer/Reed. The Portland-based firm is recognized regionally and nationally for design excellence and innovative sustainable design solutions. Mayer-Reed’s 32 years of experience represents a wide array of project types in both public and private sectors. Projects range from waterfront and site master planning, to natural water systems, transportation corridors, bridges, urban renewal, museums, parks and recreation, government services facilities and corporate and higher education campuses. Her award-winning built work includes Portland’s Vera Katz Eastbank Esplande, The Rain Garden at the Oregon Convention Center, and the Nike World Headquarters Campus. Mayer-Reed has recently served as a board member and secretary of the Architecture Foundation of Oregon. In Portland, she serves on the South Waterfront District Design Review committee and on the new EcoDistricts Task Force. At a national level, she has chaired the jury for the American Society of Landscape Architects Awards Program. Currently she is appointed to the National American Institute of Architects (AIA) Sustainability Advisory Team and the General Services Administration Peer Review Board. (0 Ratings)
