Georgia Tech World Town Planning Day 2012: The Atlanta Falcons StadiumGeorgia Institute of TechnologyAtlanta, GA Free event World Town Planning Day is intended to expose the public to the field of planning and to the impact that quality planning can have on a community. Our specific focus is to introduce the attendees to the plans and debates surrounding the proposed Atlanta Falcons stadium and to begin to explore their implications. We will use the proposed Falcons stadium as a case study around the importance of planning, discussing the interplay between economic development, community development, public policy, and issues of equity.
This WTPD event involves a brief introduction to the event, three panelist speakers with varied perspectives and backgrounds, and both prepared Q&A and audience Q&A sessions.
Instructors: Dr. Benjamin Flowers Benjamin Flowers joined the faculty of architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2005. His work examines architecture as a form of social activity situated within the intersecting spheres of politics, culture, and economy. Looking in particular at skyscrapers and stadiums, he focuses on the ways these structures are constructed, the ends to which they are used, and the nature of public reaction to them. His research has attracted recognition and funding from Columbia University’s Buell Center for Architecture, Cornell University’s John Nolen Fellowship, the Society of Architectural Historians, and the Hagley Museum and Library. He is the editor of the forthcoming Architecture in an Age of Uncertainty (Ashgate Press). His first book, Skyscraper: The Politics and Power of Building New York City in the Twentieth Century (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2009), was named a 2010 Outstanding Academic Title in Architecture by Choice Magazine. Other recent publications include "Stadium Architecture, Visual Iconography, and the Shaping of Urban and Sporting Identities," in The Visual in Sport (Routledge, 2011). He is the faculty collaborator with gray_matter(s).
Flowers received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and his BA from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. He grew up in Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Bulgaria, Romania, and Washington, DC.
State Representative Mike Dudgeon Mike Dudgeon currently serves as the state Representative for District 24, which covers the southern part of Forsyth County. Representative Dudgeon recently introduced House Resolution 1871, legislation that encourages the Georgia World Congress Center Authority to avoid using public funding in financing the Falcons stadium. Prior to taking office on January 10, 2011, he served on the Forsyth County Board of Education where he advocated for high standards for the students, fiscal discipline, and direct communication with the public.
Representative Dudgeon has bachelors and masters degrees in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech, holds four U.S. patents, and has been in the technology business his entire career. He helped build the Alpharetta based startup Radiant
Systems in the 1990s and was part of the group that took the company public. In 2001 he founded Tier One, an engineering consulting business in Forsyth County. Within a few years it was recognized as a leading provider of embedded systems projects in the Southeast. After selling his interest in Tier One, Representative Dudgeon and partners in 2007 founded Qualia Labs which is performing research into new computer architectures and artificial intelligence. He recently joined Alpharetta-based video game company Hi-Rez Studios as Vice President of Research.
