Live Webinar: Public Officials and Form-Based Codes 2Form-Based Codes InstituteChicago, IL Arlington County Board member Chris Zimmerman has gained much experience with the development and administration of form-based codes during the past decade. As a leader of his county's successful effort to revitalize the Columbia Pike, a major corridor through the county that long suffered from lack of new development, he learned the ins and outs of form-based coding from a public official's perspective.
Chris will describe the challenges presented by the Columbia Pike code as a code specifically for a built-up area. He will discuss the adaptations that were made, and the special questions that arose about affordable housing and related issues. Chris will discuss the challenges of code administration, preparing staff, and helping city officials to understand how the code works.
Webinar participants will see the behind-the-scenes work that went into making the Columbia Pike code a success in bringing new development to the corridor.
More Instructors: Christopher Zimmerman County Board Member Christopher Zimmerman was first elected to the Arlington County Board in 1996. A former civic association president and planning commissioner, Mr. Zimmerman has been an advocate of the County’s legacy of transit-oriented development and managed growth, and a proponent of the principles of the New Urbanism. Mr. Zimmerman has worked to promote the concept of “smart growth” as the Washington area seeks to cope with the problems of traffic congestion and environmental pollution. In 2004 Mr. Zimmerman became the first recipient of the Livable Communities Leadership Award from the Washington Regional Network for Livable Communities. He has also been honored by the Virginia Transit Association for Outstanding Contribution by a Public Official (2003), and by the Arlington Coalition for Sensible Transportation as a Champion of Sensible Transportation (2001). rior to his service on the Arlington County Board, Mr. Zimmerman was Chief Economist and Committee Director for Federal Budget and Taxation at the National Conference of State Legislatures. He holds a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Economics from The American University. (4 Ratings)
