AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities – Training CourseHighway Safety Research CenterSan Diego, CA The American Association of State Highway Transportation Official’s (AASHTO) Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities serves as a key resource for planning and designing bicycle facilities in the U.S. The 2012 edition has significantly expanded the content of the guide, more than doubling in length and going from three chapters (1999 edition) to seven chapters.
This training provides a comprehensive overview of the new content of the guide. It focuses on topic areas in the guide that have been significantly expanded, including the planning chapter; characteristics of bicyclists and common trip types; and the planning and design of bike lanes, shared lanes, bicycle boulevards, off-road paths, and bike routes.

Instructors: Tom Huber Tom Huber manages Toole Design Group’s Madison, WI office. Prior to joining TDG, he was the Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for Wisconsin DOT (WisDOT) for 20 years. At WisDOT, Tom was responsible for writing the statewide bicycle plan and the award-winning state pedestrian plan. Tom was also responsible for producing the state's bicycle and pedestrian planning guidelines and was the key contributor to the development of WisDOT's design manuals. He also established the first set of courses to train planners and engineers, creating a knowledge base and culture within the department that supports bicycling and walking. Tom is one of the founding members of the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals and received the Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. Gina Coffman Gina Coffman was the primary planner for the implementation of the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan between 2009 and 2011. Her skills in planning, design, public engagement and project managing helped to establish over 170 miles of bicycle routes throughout the city. Gina has been involved in all aspects of bicycle projects from planning to presentation graphics on projects including bike lanes, bicycle boulevards, bicycle crossing improvements, signed bicycle routes, road diets and bicycle parking. Gina has extensive experience collecting and analyzing data related to the installation of bicycle facilities, as well as managing the prioritization process for annual bicycle projects including the development of prioritization criteria.
