Safe Routes to School WebinarIdaho Smart GrowthBoise, ID This in-depth webinar on Safe Routes to School will provide comprehensive information on the Safe Routes to School Program, why it is important and strategies to implement a program at your school or in your community. Upon completion of this training participates will:
- Be able to explain why fewer youth are walking and biking to school and what has caused this shift from several decades ago. - Be able to describe the consequences of fewer youth walking/biking to school, to health and to the community. - Understand the smart growth principles that encourage walking and biking by bringing destinations closer together with better connections. - Learn the primary tools used to build streets that are easier and safer to walk and bike on. - Understand why schools are sited in distant locations and strategies to change this for future schools.
Instructors: Deanna Smith Deanna Smith is a Project Coordinator for Idaho Smart Growth, a statewide non-profit organization whose mission is bringing people together to create great places to live through sensible growth. For the past three years her work has focused on Complete Streets including a 2 year pilot project working with five Idaho Communities helping them integrate a “complete streets” into their transportation policies, planning and design. These five pilot projects were conducted with ARRA funding from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention through a contract with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. Deanna has given several presentations, including at APA Idaho conferences, on Complete Streets and participated in or conducted community assessments for biking and walking. She has attended numerous trainings and workshops on Complete Streets and Safe Route to School including earning certificates for Complete Streets Training from Portland State University’s Institute for Pedestrian and Bicycle Innovation and as a Charrette Facilitator from the National Charrette Institute. She earned her B.A. from Evergreen State College in 1981 with an emphasis on planning and community development. Additionally she has served on various planning committees including Blueprint for Good Growth Regional Plan & Ada County Comprehensive Plan Steering Committees, Ada County Open Space Task Force, Demographic Advisory Committee for COMPASS (regional MPO in SW Idaho) and currently serves on COMPASS’ Regional Technical Advisory & Public Participation Committees and their Regional Planning Team, plus the City of Boise’s Ordinance Review Committee. Deanna was a Boise Business Review’s Women of the Year Honoree in 2012. Deanna has served on the East End Neighborhood Association Board of Directors since 1999. As an avid bike commuter since the age of 14 she brings a unique perspective to land use and transportation planning, combining her extensive experience in citizen participation with a technical understanding of transportation and land use planning.
