A “Balanced Portfolio” Approach to Economic Development
Economic gardening is an innovative entrepreneur-centered economic growth strategy that offers balance to the traditional economic development practice of business recruitment. It was developed in 1989 by the city of Littleton, Colorado, in conjunction with the Center for the New West. While it was introduced as a demonstration program to deal with the sudden erosion of economic conditions following the relocation of the largest employer in the city at that time, it has emerged as a prototype for a rapidly expanding movement of like-minded economic developers looking for additional methods to generate truly sustainable economic growth for their community, region, or state.
This presentation will examine the history, context, and application of economic gardening principles and practices, as well as the evolving application of specific programs in cities, regions, and states beyond Littleton, Colorado – including a pilot program recently completed Minnesota.
A basic tenet of the presentation is that civic leaders and policy-makers of the future will adopt a portfolio approach to economic development that balances “outside-in” with “inside-out” strategies, tailored to local conditions, assets, and leadership.

Back by popular demand, we’ve put together a panel of experts to discuss what has seemed to take over the world- social media. Whether we like it or not, we are in the era where people don’t generally seek out information- they wait for it to be pushed to them. No longer is social media just for those ‘young people’. Research shows that 45-54 year old are the fastest growing segment of users of social media. This session will cover a wide-ranging array of topics on how you can use social media to enhance, engage and educate your audience. Learn real life examples and ask questions from folks from a variety of backgrounds who have navigated the (sometimes complicated) sites, handled unruly comments and continuously find innovative ways to boost their traffic/statistics.

This session will discuss how to anticipate objections and potential opposition within a community and prepare to address these issues early in the process. Anticipated outcomes:
1. Further understand the impact that organized opposition can have on political decision makers.
2. What is the most effective information to gather during a complete due diligence.
3. Identify methods to effectively engage the community both before the application and during the review process.
4. Discuss effective methods to use of social media.
