Survey Research for PlannersAPA Northern New England ChapterPortland, ME This is a short course in developing samples for surveys consisting of two classes on February 26 and March 5. This course introduces students to the practice of survey research. The course is designed to teach the complete survey project process from the translation of policy or planning research questions into survey instruments that can yield statistically valid and useful results. The course emphasizes the type of survey research typically conducted for policy and planning, including the measurement of behavior, attributes, perceptions and preferences.

The course is designed to teach the complete survey project process from the translation of policy or planning research questions into survey instruments that can yield statistically valid and useful results. The course emphasizes the type of survey research typically conducted for policy and planning, including the measurement of behavior, attributes, perceptions and preferences.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
• Determine research questions that are suitable for survey research.
• Construct survey instruments using different types of closed ended and open ended questions.
• Determine appropriate levels of sampling error and the sample frames and sizes required to achieve the desired level of sampling error.
• Choose and implement appropriate methods of survey administration including in-person, phone, mail and internet-based surveys.
• Analyze survey results using Excel and SPSS
• Construct reports of the survey project.
Instructors: Charles Colgan Charles Colgan is Professor of Public Policy and Management and Chair of the Community Planning and Development program in the Muskie School at the University of Southern Maine. He has taught survey research for more than 20 years at the Muskie School and has conducted numerous survey projects involving planning and policy issues for local, state, and federal agencies. | |
