Creating Healthy Hubs Through ZoningClarion Associates of ColoradoChapel Hill, NC Free event Creating Healthy Hubs Through Zoning: This one-hour session will explore for planners the role that zoning and subdivision regulations can play in a strategy to promote healthy communities. AICP members will hear a review of the evolution and importance of this topic, and learn what techniques are being successfully used in communities across the country to promote community health through land use policies and regulations. Examples will be described, and links provided to allow further exploration of particular approaches.
More Instructors: Roger Waldon FAICP Roger Waldon is a Principal in Clarion’s North Carolina office. He served as Planning Director for the Town of Chapel Hill for 21 years, directing the Town’s comprehensive planning and growth management functions. His planning and design background, combined with experience as a former elected official, contributed to the success of numerous planning initiatives, including: preparation and implementation of comprehensive plans, growth management strategies, intergovernmental agreements, special area studies, transportation plans, institutional partnerships, and zoning ordinance updates. He has helped to develop plans and growth management strategies for numerous NC municipalities (Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, Wake Forest, Wilson, Clemmons, Matthews, Waxhaw, Washington, Emerald Isle) and NC Counties (Moore, Orange, Iredell, Union, Johnston, Camden, Perquimans). His work in other southeastern states includes Fredericksburg, Manassas, Hanover County, and Powhatan County in Virginia; Rock Hill, Beaufort County and Orangeburg County in South Carolina; Tupelo and Pascagoula in Mississippi; and Brentwood Tennessee. He has led teams to prepare intergovernmental plans and agreements, most recently the Integrated Infrastructure Plan for Moore County, NC and its 11 municipalities, as part of the BRAC Regional Task Force work around Fort Bragg. He has also provided services to local governments to assist in managing planning operations, most recently with assistance in running the Pittsboro NC and Fayetteville NC Planning Departments. Mr. Waldon is a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners, and author of Planners and Politics, a book published by the American Planning Association. He is a frequent speaker at state and national conferences on planning best practices, serves as part of the faculty for APA’s Planners Training Service, and has been named as one of the 25 most influential planners in the first 50 years of planning in North Carolina.
