Context Sensitive Signs

Natl Alliance Pres CommissionsLittle Rock, AR

Signs in historic districts--and outside district boundaries as well--often pose vexing problems to local planners, historic district residents, business owners, sign companies, and advocates for reduced visual pollution. Needless to say, the answers are not always easy. This session will first review the legacy of case law and local government legislation affecting content, placement and size of signs. More importantly for historic district planning staff is the dilemma of reducing the number or improving the appearance of signs in the district while acknowledging significance and integrity issues related to historic advertising, directional and informational signs. Looming over all of this sign talk is public safety, community attractiveness/tourism and changing technology (moving, ever-heightening billboards and brightly illuminated signs). This session will provide a menu of best practices and an array of both successful and failed attempts at compatible signs.
