RiverRAT Training

WA State Department of Ecology/The Padilla Bay NERRBellevue, WA

This practical one-day class is for professionals involved in planning, developing, implementing, and reviewing river restoration projects (e.g., resource agency biologists and engineers, restoration planners, restoration consultants, foundation and funding entities). The River Restoration Analysis Tool (RiverRAT) is an educational reference and training aid for planning and evaluating stream management practices. It was developed for NOAA Fisheries and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to facilitate consistent and thorough evaluation of the potential impacts of proposed projects on river habitat and function, particularly for species listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. The tool is supported by a science-based document that provides a comprehensive synthesis of watershed and river sciences relevant to restoration planning and design, a checklist of project information for review, and a screening matrix for determining an appropriate level of review.

The RiverRAT tool will walk you through a series of 16 questions that parallel the phases of restoration project development. Each question is designed to help you evaluate whether a project has addressed fundamental considerations at each step of the project development process.
