Planner's Day at the CapitolAPA Colorado ChapterDenver, CO Participants will learn about existing planning laws, potential changes to those laws, and how they affect the practice of planning in Colorado. Veteran development review planners will learn about planning statutes that may affect the normal review cycle, as well as topics that our outside their specialty area. For example, participants who specialize in development review will learn about a proposal currently being considered to change the way determinations for adequate water supply must be met in addition to learning about transportation infrastructure financing. Other topics under debate that will be discussed are surface impacts of oil & gas operations, tax increment financing, and economic development planning.
New planners will learn how state laws can affect their new profession. Training objectives include being aware of how state laws affect the practice of planning, and more specifically how potential changes in those laws could affect it in the near future.
Both of the examples previously cited are also examples of how changes in state law can affect what planners can (or cannot) do, or how they must change what they do to conform to new state mandates.
Finally, planners will learn how they can participate in the legislative session and advocate for good planning laws in Colorado.
