What Are Some Ways I Can Earn CM Credit?
APA encourages certified planners to maintain a personal professional development plan. While not a requirement of the CM program, a personal professional development plan may prove to be a useful tool for AICP members as they participate in professional development activities and reflect on their professional goals. The Royal Town Planning Institute, one of our international partners, has come up with a good model for the creation of a professional development plan. For more information, please go to Part 3 of RTPI's Continuing Professional Development Program. Please keep in mind that RTPI members are required to maintain a professional development plan, while the creation of such a plan is only recommended for AICP members. What are some ways I can meet the ethics and law requirements? All qualifying law courses must be related to planning to be CM eligible. These may include, but are not limited to, environmental law, land-use law, redevelopment law, administrative law, and housing law. APA hosts an annual planning law review audio/web conference in June. It is also available for purchase as a CD-ROM at APA's PlanningBooks.com. APA's National Planning Conference offers the Bettman Symposium, a series of sessions pertaining to planning law. In addition, APA is creating an online course on planning law that will be available in early spring 2008. Many chapters also offer planning law sessions and workshops. All qualifying ethics courses must be related to the AICP Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. The Stollman Ethics Symposium at APA's National Planning Conference is dedicated to planning ethics. Many chapters host an ethics session at their chapter conferences, as well as other ethics sessions and workshops throughout the year. In addition, APA is creating an online course on planning ethics that will be available in winter 2008.
