APA's New Mentor Match Program Creating connections. Serving the next generation of planners. MentorsAre you a seasoned professional willing to provide career advice for someone early in their career? Or, do you live in Chicago and want to share the excitement of the city with an out-of-towner? Then this is the volunteer job for you. Register now to be connected with a mentee at the 2013 National Planning Conference. We ask that you be willing to participate during your stay at the conference. Communication beyond this is completely up to you and your mentee. Thank you for giving back to the profession. How it Works As a mentor you will be matched up with up an emerging professional who is attending the conference and has signed up for the program. We will give you the individual's contact information (and he or she will be provided with yours) prior to the start of the conference. Then on Saturday, April 13, from 9:15-10 a.m., and Sunday, April 14, from 4-5 p.m., APA will host a mentor meet-up orientation in the Exhibit Hall where you will have the chance to meet your mentee face-to-face and get things started. If you are not available at either of these times, you can set up a meet-up directly with your mentee. APA will provide some basic guidance, but it's up to you to show your mentee how to make the most out of their conference experience. We suggest that you invite them to sit with you in a session or two, bring them to a networking reception, and keep in touch throughout the conference. You will have the opportunity to select up to three mentor categories. They are intended to help the mentees focus on what they want to get out of this opportunity, but in no way should limit what you talk about together. Make it as fulfilling as you want it to be! Types of Mentoring- First time attendee mentor. Guidance could include: selecting sessions, navigating the conference site, meeting other members, etc.
- City of Chicago mentor. Guidance could include: touring the city, restaurant suggestions, etc.
- Career mentor. Guidance could include: professional development, job hunting, understanding different career paths for planners, etc.
