APA and John Wiley & Sons Team for New Reference Book On March 30, 2003, at APA's National Planning Conference in Denver, APA signed an agreement with John Wiley & Sons, Inc., to be the principal editor of a new 750-page reference book titled Urban Planning and Design Standards, to be published in 2005. The project will be managed out of APA's research department. "We are excited to be working with Wiley on producing this new work," said APA Executive Director Paul Farmer, AICP. "In creating this document, APA will be contributing to the growing library of work published under the highly respected Graphic Standards brand. We are honored to be the editors of the urban planning and design component of that collection." Urban Planning and Design Standards will be similar in scope and depth to Architectural Graphic Standards, currently in its 10th edition, which is also published by Wiley. While that book focuses on structural and functional issues related to buildings, Urban Planning and Design Standards will address elements outside of the building envelope, from individual lots, subdivisions, and neighborhoods, to towns, cities, and regions. The audience for Urban Planning and Design Standards will include planners (public and private sector), planning academics, developers, and city managers, as well as those in allied professions such as architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design. "I am delighted that our organizations will be working together on the ambitious Urban Planning and Design Standards publishing project," says Robert C. Garber, Vice President and Group Executive Publisher for the professional and trade group at Wiley that will be publishing the book. "This is the kind of project that Wiley excels in: working with the best partner in the field to develop must-have content for busy professionals. Urban Planning and Design Standards will join classics like Architectural Graphic Standards as the definitive reference in its field." In the coming months APA will be assembling an advisory board for this project, which will help to guide the form and content of this publication throughout manuscript development. We will also be seeking contributors to this publication, including both previously published work and new commissions. For further information on the project, please contact either Megan Lewis, AICP, project manager (mlewis@planning.org) or Bill Klein, AICP, director of research (bklein@planning.org). |
