Community Video Survey

Community video is an exciting new tool that many cities and towns are using to involve citizens in thinking about the future. In 2001, APA published Lights, Camera, Community Video, a guide to producing such videos. Sponsored by the Orton Family Foundation, this popular Planning Advisory Service Report (#500/501) contains step-by-step advice, as well as a DVD with examples of two successful community videos.

Now the foundation is exploring the feasibility of launching a national contest to encourage citizens in more communities to create such videos as a means of sparking interest in better planning. They are eager to gauge the level of interest among planners and others about this idea.

The American Planning Association encourages its members to share their opinions with the Orton Family Foundation by responding to the survey, which is located at: www.rrcresearch.com/surveys/communityvideo/ad4.htm.

The Foundation has agreed to provide APA with its findings. In turn, APA will keep its members apprised of future developments, should the proposed national contest move forward.

The survey takes only a few minutes to complete. As an extra incentive, the foundation will randomly select a respondent to receive a Canon S400 digital camera.
