Since the January 12, 2010, earthquake, APA has been exploring ways that U.S. planners, perhaps with partners in other countries, can assist in the eventual recovery and rebuilding process.
APA is working with UN-HABITAT. The government of Haiti, through its reconstruction coordinator, has formally requested that the U.S. government include APA in its reconstruction initiatives. We will update our website as more specific information is made available.

Thank you for your offer of support to assist the country of Haiti as it continues to recover from the January 12, 2010, earthquake. APA has been exploring ways that U.S. planners, perhaps with partners in other countries, can assist in recovery and rebuilding. Some of our members have already been involved through various initiatives.
Since January, APA has met with officials of the U.S. government, the government of Haiti, and other organizations. Most recently, APA was asked to provide the names of two volunteers with expertise in environmental planning and housing who would be willing and able to commit to six months of unpaid service. These individuals would serve on an interdisciplinary assistance team along with experts identified by AIA and ASLA and coordinated by Habitat for Humanity.

Urban Planner — Disaster Reconstruction/Settlement Planning (Haiti)
5–7 or more years of experience
Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Six months
Habitat for Humanity is seeking an experienced urban planner to support a joint initiative of Architecture for Humanity and Habitat for Humanity. The selected candidate will join a team of international and local professionals to develop an emergency plan to house people displaced by the recent earthquake in Haiti.
The ideal candidate will have experience in international development and settlement planning, including low-income housing and mixed-income, mixed-use development. Working alongside local urban planners, transit planners, and environmental experts, the candidate will help draft an emergency plan to expand development of a mixed-use, mixed-income community on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. The position is based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and the selected candidate will work on site to assist in the long-term reconstruction effort.
French is preferred but not required.
Travel and some meals will be covered, however time is donated pro bono. A small stipend may be possible, depending on grant funding availability.
Environmental Planner — Land Remediation and Reforestation
5-7 plus years
Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Six months
