Following an internal promotion of the previous incumbent, the City of Murphy now seeks a dynamic, innovative, servant leader with a progressive professional history in city planning and development services to round out our executive leadership team as the next Director of Community & Economic Development! As our Director, you will be responsible for the operation, planning, administration, financial management, and inter-governmental relations for the Community Development Department along with the management, oversight, and strategic execution of city Economic Development programs and initiatives!

First review of applications begins May 27, 2024. Following the first review date, will begin the identification of eligible applicants based on the established criteria published in the position description.

COMPENSATION:

Hiring Range: $130,000 - $155,000 (DOQ)
Full Pay Range: $121,996 - $170,795
$70 Monthly Cellphone Allowance

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The Community & Economic Development Department oversees two critically important areas. Community Development staff ensures that developments within the City of Murphy enhances the City's overall quality of life through Planning & Zoning, Building Inspections, and Code & Health Enforcement. The Community Development Department also oversees the City's Geographic Information System (GIS). In the area of Economic Development, this Director works closely with the Murphy Community Development Corporation (MCDC) and the Murphy Municipal Development District (MDD) to promote and retain high-quality development in all parts of the city. This function includes implementing effective business retention and expansion strategies and providing incentives to new businesses that can demonstrate value to the City such as job creation, increased sales tax revenue and adding to the diversity of retail and dining establishments. The Department operates with a staff of 5.5 employees that includes a Planning & GIS Administrator, a part-time Administrative Assistant, and a Building Official that oversees the Code Compliance Coordinator and Permit Technician (to be potentially added in FY25).

OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES:

The new Director of Community & Economic Development will join a dedicated team of public servants focused on innovation and continual improvement. Opportunities and challenges in the years ahead will include updating the City's comprehensive plan, exploring redevelopment opportunities as the City reaches buildout, and building upon the City's award-winning business retention and expansion plan in efforts to increase sales tax revenue.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Urban Planning, Public Administration or related field, Seven (7) years progressively responsible experience in municipal development related field, Two (2) years of supervisory experience, and a positive can-do attitude! Must possess a valid Texas Class C Driver's License with a driving record that is in compliance with City policy.
